PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — A career-high scoring game (30 points) from senior Caitlyn Staab (Lynbrook, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) guided the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team (6-3, 5-1 Skyline) as they extended their series winning streak over sibling rival SJC Long Island (2-8, 1-3 Skyline) to nine games in a 91-75 road win on Saturday.
How It Happened
After a mostly back-and-forth first period, the Bears would go on a 21-4 run to finish the frame, spearheaded by Staab scoring 11 of the Bears' 21 points in that five-minute span. Lauren Quesada (Westbury, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) would pull down nine rebounds in the quarter on the way to her third-straight double-double game of the season. The Golden Eagles faced a 20-point deficit at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw the Bears get into foul trouble, leading to nine free-throw attempts for the Eagles in the final three minutes of the half. SJC Long Island would take advantage, scoring on six of those nine attempts. The navy and white went on to hold a 47-26 lead heading into the intermission.
The Golden Eagles would fight their way to a winning quarter on the back of their free-throw attempt lead, shooting 7-8 from the charity stripe as opposed to the Bears' lone free-throw attempt. However, this would only give way for SJC Long Island to cut two points into their deficit.
A layup from Staab just a minute into the final frame pushed the Bears to a 25-point lead, their largest of the game. With 11 points in the period from freshman Alyssa Signor, the Golden Eagles would win the quarter 27-24, but 12 points in the quarter from Victoria Porcasi (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) would ensure their ninth-straight win over the Golden Eagles.
For the Bears
- Staab dropped a career-high 30 points and pulled down nine rebounds narrowly missing a double-double.
- Porcasi recorded 27 points and dished out a career-high eight assists while Quesada nabbed her third-straight double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds.
- Kelly O'Donnell (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) added 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.
