Justin Gist (Brooklyn, NY / Newsome) was named Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Week and Joanna Marciniec(Brooklyn, NY / Baruch) was named Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week in reports released by the conference earlier this week.
Gist, a sophomore guard for the Bears, averaged 16.8 points and 3.2 assists over a five game stretch where the Bears picked up wins over perennial foes College of Staten Island and Medgar Evers. In a loss to Trine University in the championship game of the College of Staten Island Tournament of Heroes, Gist dropped a season-high 23 points, with 5-for-10 shooting from behind the arc and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Gist currently leads the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game.
Marciniec, a freshman guard for the Lady Bears, has been a spark plug serving as Coach Frank P. Carbone's sixth woman, but has started several games due to the team's injury problems. Over the four game period, Marciniec averaged 6.8 points and 5.8 rebounds. Despite being only 5'7", Marciniec is second on the team in blocks, swatting away three in the games against defending Division III National Champions, Howard Payne and Old Westbury.
