Bears Volleyball Notches Second Win Defeating Medgar Edgars

BROOKLYN, NY – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's volleyball team snapped a five-match skid and notched their second win of the season, defeating Medgar Evers College, 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 25-13), at Brooklyn Technical High School on Monday night.

St. Joseph's (2-5, 0-1 HVMAC) was led by junior Martin Torres (Ozone Park, NY/St. Francis Prep) and freshman Raul Urshela (Orlando, FL/Colonial) each put away 15 kills, setting a new Bears single-match record. Sophomore Iqbal Husain (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Gardens) also matched a Bears single-match record dishing out 29 assists.

Senior Muhammad Ali Bhatti (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) anchored the defense bringing up a season-best 18 digs and served up a team-high four kills. Senior Maciej Sadowski (Brooklyn, NY/Cathedral Prep) contributed 10 digs and seven kills.

Medgar Evers (0-9, 0-2 CUNYAC) was led by Jamal Baptiste who had eight kills to go along with 15 digs.  Olando Cummings also chipped in a team-high eight kills.  Libero Christian Rodriguez had a match-high 19 digs.

The match was highly contested from start to finish with 16 ties and 11 lead changes. St. Joseph's created separation midway through the first and second sets and held on for the set victory.

In the third set, the Bears had an 18-13 lead, but Medgar won seven points in-a-row to take the a 20-18 lead which they wouldn't relinquish.  But it would be all St. Joseph's in the fourth set, as the Bears hit .423, amassing 12 kills and committing only one attack error, led by Urshela who had five kills in the frame and Sadowski who had four.  The Bears raced out to an 11-6 lead and never looked back taking the set at 25-13.

The win also marks their highest season win total in their short four-year history.

The Bears return to action on the road facing Yeshiva University on Thursday, March 1st in a Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference tilt starting at 8 p.m.
